Holiday Shopping on the Upper East Side

December

New York City is a prime location for holiday shopping — in no small part thanks to the designer flagships and locally owned boutiques lining the Upper East Side. On festive strolls through the neighborhood, residents of The Kent can pause to seek out gifts for friends and family, or simply pick up something special for themselves.

Edit New York | 1298 Madison Avenue
A Christmas trip to Paris is off the cards this year, but you can make up for that with some serious spending at Edit New York. Their Madison Avenue store is swimming with designer labels — from AG Adriano Goldschmied to Victoria Beckham — which will certainly appeal to the discerning women in your life. On our gift list this year: a fitted suede blazer by Altuzarra; the double-breasted noir coat from Vanessa Bruno (perfect for blustery strolls in nearby Central Park); Sablyn's incredibly comfy cable-knit sweater; and navy pleat-front straight-leg pants from Officine Generale. You can also source snazzy stocking-fillers in the form of gold-plated pearl-drop earrings from Aurélie Bidermann.

Alice + Olivia | 1188 Madison Avenue
A further flurry of women's fashion can be found at Alice + Olivia's Upper East Side store — a 15-minute walk from The Kent (depending on how many bags you're carrying). Wow friends and family with fashionable gifts, such as an olive-green notch-collar jumpsuit (quite the millennial fashion statement); a psychedelically inspired Jeannie bow-collar blouse; or a rose-hued cable-knit turtleneck. Alice + Olivia also do a fab line in vegan leather — including crop tops, jumpsuits, and midi dresses.

Barbour | 1047 Madison Avenue
Give your father, boyfriend, brother, or partner that voguish look seen in the Netflix series "The Crown" with a shopping trip to Barbour. The waxed jackets and coats are as practical as they are debonair — and will prove indispensable for windswept trips upstate. Lambswool scarves come in myriad tartan patterns, while a burgundy-hued crewneck sweater is ideal for cozy nights spent at home, Scotch whisky in hand. There's even a special range of stocking fillers featuring flat caps, wallets, and some extremely stylish socks. Prince Charles would approve.

The Corner Bookstore | 1313 Madison Avenue
Socially distanced browsing is in place at this legendary book boutique, so it almost feels like you have the place to yourself. The Corner Bookstore has been delighting NYC's bibliophiles since the 1970s — its shelves loaded with "only the best of the best" tomes. Peruse subjects including history, travel, cooking, and poetry to find perfect presents for all and sundry. Spotted in the windows recently have been “Modern Comfort Food: A Barefoot Contessa Cookbook,” by Ina Garten (ideal for any gourmets you know); and Susannah Marren's scintillating novel, “A Palm Beach Scandal.”
